About us

Racing Victoria (RV) is one of Australia’s leading sporting organisations, and the independent governing body of thoroughbred racing in Victoria. We develop, promote and manage the conduct of the racing of thoroughbred horses in Victoria to safeguard its integrity.

The Veterinary Services department has a rare and exciting opportunity available for a Casual Veterinary Nurse and a Casual Sampling Assistant. These roles provides services at race meetings across Eastern Victoria (Gippsland, Mornington Peninsula, Casey region, including the Yarra Ranges Shire) and Northan Regions (Loddon Mallee and Hume region).

These are casual positions we are seeking candidates who are available to work across weekdays, weekends and evenings to suit the racing calendar. Hours may vary from week to week, depending on operational needs.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitoring the equine welfare of thoroughbred horses when acting in a capacity for RV;
  • Assisting veterinarians in the clinical examination of horses (including endoscopy) and the provision of first aid;
  • Assisting and facilitating the conduct of RV’s Anti-Doping Program;
  • Attending race meetings, trials, jump outs, out-of-competition testing, stable inspections, Werribee International Horse Centre and pre-race veterinary inspections; and
  • Attending metropolitan and country TAB meetings, trials, trackwork, stables and other locations as directed to assist with the collection and processing of samples for the purposes of drug analysis.
  • Ensuring the security of horses to be sampled at all times, including accompanying horses to the sampling area.

About You

You will thrive in a fast-paced and hands-on environment. Some of the skills and experience you will bring include:

  • Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing;
  • Experience as a veterinary nurse working with horses;
  • A strong interest and passion for equine welfare;
  • Competency in handling horses in all circumstances;
  • Capacity to work autonomously and unsupervised to deliver objectives;
  • High level of attention to detail;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
  • A valid Victorian driver’s licence;
  • A basic understanding of horse health and welfare issues;
  • Knowledge of sample collection and processing procedures and endoscopic examinations (desirable).
